New Analysis Finds the Average Renovation Takes 77 Weeks, Most of It Spent Waiting, While Chapter Renovation Cuts That to 38 Weeks

New market data shows Chapter Renovation project timelines are approximately 51% shorter than the industry average, with additional research highlighting the time spent on planning, approvals and delays
NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Chapter Renovation, a full-service, technology-driven design-build firm, today shared new market analysis which showcases its average completion time of 38 weeks for the company’s completed full-scope luxury renovation projects compared with an approximate 77-week industry average identified through its analysis of publicly available industry research and market data.

The comparison represents approximately 39 fewer weeks required for project completion, meaning Chapter Renovation’s reported average timeline is about 51% shorter than the approximate 77-week industry average. Building on the company’s findings, research compiled by Chapter Renovation examines the numbers behind extended renovation schedules, including homeowner-reported delays, lengthy planning periods and months spent securing approvals.
The review identifies a widespread expectation of delays. In a 2024 Clever Real Estate survey of 1,000 U.S. homeowners, 58% said renovations take longer than expected and 41% reported significant delays. A separate Angi survey of 1,000 Americans found that 52% believed home renovations always take longer than planned.
“Homeowners undertaking full-scale renovations want to understand what is happening, what could affect the schedule, and when they can realistically expect their home to be finished,” said Eran Polack, CEO and Founder of Chapter Renovation. “Data shows that delays have become an accepted part of the renovation experience, leaving ample opportunity for better planning, coordination, and technology to create a more predictable and faster process.”
Chapter Renovation found that planning can consume more time than construction for typical projects. The 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Study, based on 32,615 respondents, found that kitchen renovations averaged 9.6 months of planning and 5.1 months of building. Across room types, homeowners spent roughly twice as long planning as building, underscoring the importance of decisions made before construction beings.
“Construction is only one part of a home renovation timeline,” said Eli Moyal, Founder and COO of Chapter Renovation. “The real opportunity to create a better outcome is to manage the entire process as one connected system. That means coordinating design, approvals, procurement and construction early enough to identify risks before they become delays.”
Approvals add another substantial scheduling requirement. Sweeten’s guidance for New York City co-op and condo layout changes places building-board and Department of Buildings approvals at approximately 2 to 6 months, with longer reviews possible. Separately, research estimates that punch-list work, final inspections and project closeout typically require approximately 2 to 8 weeks. One of Chapter Renovation’s core avenues to faster timelines is to coordinate these phases with other project activities wherever possible to avoid adding each phase consecutively to the overall timeline.
Chapter Renovation attributes its 38-week average to an integrated design-build model supported by its proprietary RenoTech™ platform. Specialized teams sequence design, permitting, procurement, project management and construction so appropriate activities can move forward in parallel, including identifying long-lead materials during design and approvals. RenoTech™ provides a central source for schedules, budgets, documents, approvals and next steps, while its AI-assisted tools surface potential delays and material issues early, giving project teams and clients the visibility needed to respond quickly.
